Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Counselor Ahmed Abu Zeid, stated that this is the inaugural meeting of the six-partite ministerial committee, established according to resolution 8221 adopted by the Arab League Foreign Ministers' emergency meeting on December 9, to assess the situation and determine the next steps to defend the status of Jerusalem.

Spokesperson explained that the meeting aims to follow up the repercussions of the U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and to move its Embassy to the City. The meeting is also held to coordinate Arab efforts and actions at the international level in order to preserve the historical and legal status of Jerusalem, which is considered as one of the final-status issues, to be determined during negotiations between the concerned parties. The meeting will also reaffirm the rejection of  any decisions made in contravention of UN resolutions or would alter the status of the City, given the negative impact of such endeavors on the future of the Peace Process and the comprehensive and just settlement of the Palestinian Question.
