Foreign Minister Shoukry discusses with US Secretary of State Pompeo several issues of mutual interest during phone call

On Monday, October 28, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry conducted a phone call with his American counterpart Mike Pompeo, as part of the regular consultations between the two sides, whereby the call featured discussions regarding various aspects of the strategic relations between Egypt and the United States, in addition to regional matters of mutual interest.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Counselor Ahmed Hafez stated that during the call, Minister Shoukry and Secretary Pompeo consulted on means to advance and develop cooperation between Egypt and the United States in several fields, in a manner that would reflect the deep and strategic relations between the two countries, and achieve their mutual interests.

The Official Spokesperson added that the phone call addressed overall regional topics, with Syria at the forefront. Foreign Minister Shoukry emphasized the Egyptian position which rejects the assault on Syrian territories, and the need to work on ending it, as well as not allowing change to the demographic composition of north eastern Syria; and immediately commencing the political process in accordance with Security Council Resolution No. 2254. Also, there was emphasis on the importance of continuing to work on confronting all shapes and forms of terrorism, in the framework of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, as well as Egypt’s appreciation towards what the American side has achieved by eliminating the terrorist Abou Bakr Al-Baghdady. Secretary Pompeo commended Egyptian efforts in relation to achieving security and stability in the region.

Additionally, during the phone call, the latest developments pertaining to the Renaissance Dam issue and the meeting the US Administration has called for in Washington were discussed. The US Secretary expressed the Administration’s understanding of the importance of this issue and the need to reach a fair agreement that would achieve the interests of all three countries.

Counselor Hafez concluded by noting that Minister Shoukry and Secretary Pompeo agreed to continue consultation and close coordination on overall developments and issues in the region.
