Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Water Resources participated in the meeting held on January 13, 2020, at the US Department of the Treasury, chaired by Secretary of Treasury Steven Mnuchin, in presence of World Bank President David Malpass, to discuss developments of the ongoing negotiations on the rules for the filling and operationalization of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
The Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Counselor Ahmed Hafez, stated that the meetings included lengthy and in-depth consultations between the Egyptian and US sides during which Egypt outlined its vision on the rules and mechanisms that should govern the GERD filling and operationalization. This was followed by a meeting of the Foreign and Water Ministers of Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia, and the accompanying delegations, to discuss the technical foundations and regulations necessary to reach a just and balanced agreement on the GERD filling and operationalization.
The Spokesperson added that the technical negotiations are scheduled to resume on January 14, 2020 at the ministerial level, to review and discuss the results of the technical consultations.
