Foreign Minister receives phone call from Italian counterpart, receives Greek counterpart, and meets Arab League Secretary-General

In the context of continuous communication and consultation between Egypt and its European partners on issues of common concern, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received today December 22 a phone call from Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Luigi Di Maio. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Counselor Ahmed Hafez stated that the two ministers discussed the rapidly occuring developments in Libya, stressing the importance of maintaining stability in the Mediterranean basin.

Minister Shoukry continued his intensive contacts later today concerning the situation in Libya and the Mediterranean, as he received Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias who conducted a quick visit to Cairo arriving from Libya. Hafez explained that the meeting assessed the latest developments concerning the Libyan file, and affirmed the need for a comprehensive settlement to the crisis with a view to restoring security and stability in Libya, noting that this requires concerted international efforts and the completion of preparations for the Berlin track.

The Foreign Minister also met with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, to discuss the regional situation, whereby Shoukry affirmed the importance of the Arab League's role in coordinating and consolidating joint Arab action in order to address the challenges facing the Arab region, including the crisis in Libya. In this regard, the two officials exchanged views on means to fulfill the aspirations of the brotherly Libyan people and to restore security and stability in the country​​​​
