At Meeting with the High Representative for the UN Alliance of Civilizations: Foreign Minister stresses the importance of dialogue to prevent conflicts and promote a culture of peace

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received today May 6th the High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations(UNAOC), Miguel Ángel Moratinos. The meeting dealt with the cooperation between Egypt and the initiative of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, which aims to improve cooperation and understanding among nations and peoples across cultures.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Counselor Ahmed Hafez, stated that Minister Shoukry started the meeting by stressing that cooperation between Egypt and the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations initiative is stemmed from the Egyptian belief in the importance of dialogue to prevent conflicts and spread the culture of peace, tolerance and coexistence, as well as the importance of eradicating radicalism and extremist ideology.

 Moreover, Shoukry reviewed Egypt's role at the national, regional and international levels in combating extremism and terrorism, in addition to supporting a culture of peace, coexistence and understanding among the various peoples. He also highlighted the efforts and achievements of the Egyptian government in promoting the principle of citizenship and equality amongst citizens.

 

On his part, the High Representative for the UNAOC hailed Egypt’s great efforts in countering terrorism and extremist ideology, and expressed appreciation for the role of “Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism” in this regard. The meeting also tackled the importance of working together in the framework of efforts to combat hate speech and extremist ideology through the media and in light of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. The two officials also examined further prospects of cooperation between Egypt and the United Nations.
