Egyptian Foreign Minister Chairs the AU Executive Council Closing Session

The 36th Ordinary Session of the African Union Executive Council, held in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on February 6 and 7, 2020 and chaired by Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, was concluded this evening. During the meetings, preparations took place for the 33rd Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of States and Governments of the African Union scheduled on February 9 and 10, 2020. 

 

The Executive Council meetings discussed a number of priority themes on the AU agenda, namely promoting peace and security, addressing the humanitarian situation in the continent, as well as issues related to the AU institutional reform. 

 

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Counselor Ahmed Hafez, stated that Minister Shoukry praised, in his closing remarks, the spirit of cooperation between member states during the Executive Council meetings, which contributed to coming up with decisions that would enhance the course of African action, and achieve the aspirations of states and peoples in various fields. 

 

Hafez added that, during the meetings, Egypt was elected to the membership of the AU Peace and Security Council for the period 2020-2022 with an overwhelming majority, also Dr. Amal Atta Ammar was re-elected as a member of the AU Advisory Board on Corruption, in addition, Dr. Mohamed Helal was elected to the AU Commission on International Law.
