Egypt and counterterrorism:

  • The Egyptian vision in the fight against terrorism stems from a firm and steadfast position adopted by the Egyptian state consisting in the fact that terrorist groups of all kinds represent an equal threat, and that they derive their thought from the same ideological source which incites violence, murder, and intimidating innocent people. In this context, Egypt believes that extremism of all forms and manifestations is considered as the ideological umbrella for terrorist organizations in spreading their destructive messages and rallying supporters by falsifying religious concepts to achieve their political objectives.
  • The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is keen on promoting the comprehensive Egyptian counter-terrorism approach to curb this phenomenon with all its dimensions: ideologically, organizationally, and financially, within the various international forums. Egypt is also involved in efforts to combat the terrorist organization Daesh with its participation in the meetings of the Global Coalition against Daesh, and as a member of the Global Counterterrorism Forum. Egyptian diplomacy has also succeeded in securing Egypt’s victory to preside over the UN Security Council Counter- Terrorism Committee in 2016. This opened wide horizons for introducing the Egyptian comprehensive Counterterrorism vision.
  • The Egyptian religious institutions, represented in both Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and Dar al-Ifta, play a key role in countering extremist ideology with a number of initiatives aimed at spreading and disseminating moderate and tolerant religious teachings, dismantling the ideological structure on which the terrorist organizations are established, and refuting the extremist content promoted by such groups via social media in particular. The efforts of the moderate Egyptian religious platforms are highly appreciated at the international level, as the Egyptian religious institutions enjoy a prestigious international stature and large credibility amongst the Muslim masses worldwide.
