1-In response to the burning of al-aqsa mosque by a jewish terrorist in 1969, saudi arabia convened an unguent meeting for all islamic countries to address this matter. the participants agreed on establishing a permanent body to ameliorate their cooperation on issues related to islamic religion. 2- Saudi Arabia has always played significant role in supporting the organization of the islamic conference (OIC) politically, economically, and financially.
3-In 2004, member states (57 states) elected new secretary general for the oic, professor ekmeleddin ihsanoglu from turkey.
4-Once he took office, the custodian of the two holy mosques, king abdullah has given due consideration to rejuvenate the OIC . for this reason, saudi arabia hosted a meeting for prominent islamic intellectuals in september 2005 in mecca. the meeting addressed the challenges that the islamic nation is facing. it concluded valuable recommendations on how to approach the crisis of islamic world (Mecca declaration).
5-The extraordinary summit of the oic took place on 7-8 december 2005 in mecca. it focused, among other issues, on the ten years plan of restructuring the oic. president of the arab republic of egypt, h.e. hosny mubarak, attended the summit and delivered a speech, illustrating the egyptian position regarding this issue. he also highlighted the necessity of portraying the moderate nature of islam and enhancing solidarity among muslim countries.
