Second Meeting of National Committee for combating Avian Flu to contain the disease

1. Following up the extraordinary meeting of the National  committee for combating Avian Flu, Ministers of Health and Agriculture met with representatives of the Agencies concerned on 19th February, procedures and measures to combat the proliferation of the disease among domestic birds and minimize human infection by adopting the pre-emptive warning method and  disease containment were reviewed.

2.      A mechanism in cooperation with Local Authorities in governorates and the  Egyptian Vetinerary Medicine Department ,  was devised to dispose safely of the remnants of  dead birds by collecting it in specific locations  at various districts and disposing  them safely in disposal sites at every governorate.

3.      Ministers of Agriculture and Health denied what  was previously circulated by the media as the existence of cases declared to be positive before the first positive  infection with avian flu was detected on Friday 17 February2006 .

The Ministers also affirmed that up till now, there were no Human infections since all those in close contact with infected birds tested negative .

The Minister of Health added that his ministry has tested five thousand citizens who all tested negative for the Avian Flu Virus H5N1,since the  Supreme National Committee to Combat Bird Flu  was established on 22nd October 2005.

4.       The following is a review of bird deaths reported in all Governorates:

FIRST: Governorates in which positive cases were detected :

Cairo:

- Eight new  cases of bird deaths at homes were reported with figures ranging between 5 to 50 chickens at different areas .Cases of  bird flu tested positive in those samples and   up to 1000 chickens  in the vicinity of the location were destroyed and those in close contact with the birds were tested , the tests proved negative.

Giza:

 a- Minister of Agriculture directed a 15- day closure of the Giza Zoo as a precautionary measure in light of 83 bird deaths among various species of ducks , geese and turkey all testing positive .563 birds were destroyed and all sanitization procedures were taken at the Zoo . The Zoo closed doors to a large sector of people , mostly children .

Meanwhile, Ministers of Health and Agriculture stated that there was no threat from visiting parks and  sporting clubs.

b- Cases of bird deaths were reported in homes in a number of governorates. The number of deaths did not exceed 50 chickens all of which tested positive .All required procedures were taken including culling chickens in surrounding areas, and taking samples from those in close contact with the chickens. The samples tested negative.

c- 134 cases of different bird species at the Faculty of Agriculture farm were reported to be dead. The farm is home to 13500 species of birds .The required tests are being made and 22 samples were collected from those in close contact with the birds.

Dakahlia :

a-      The required procedures were taken to destroy birds within the vicinity of positive infections detected at Mazala town , samples taken from people in contact with the birds tested negative.

b-      Competent authorities were notified of the occurrence of chicken deaths at one of the farms managed by the  Bank for Development & Agricultural Credit branch at Mit Ghamr . Samples taken tested positive and 56 thousand chickens were destroyed .

Qalubia:

No positive cases were detected until now after two pits were previously reported at two villages All chickens were destroyed in the house and it’s vicinity where the cases were detected. Cases of bird destruction did not exceed 500 chickens. Samples taken from those in close contact were all negative. 

Beni Suef :

 Competent authorities took the required procedures to destroy chickens in the vicinity of four infection centres declared on 19th February 2006. Those in contact with the birds were examined.

Qena

600 chickens were destroyed in areas surrounding the  positive case detected at 13 contiguous homes at  Dishna, people in contact with the birds at infection locations tested negative.

Second : New Governorates where bird deaths were reported 

Behira :   

 A Mahmoudia farm informed competent authorities of the occurrence of bird deaths. Tests proved positive and all 4000 chickens were destroyed. All preventive and sanitary measures were taken and the 5 people in contact with the chickens tested negative.
