1. President and Yemen's Saleh review ME scene
President Hosni Mubarak and Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh discussed over the phone the regional scene and preparations for the Arab summit to be held in Khartoum next week, the Presidential Spokesman said yesterday.
The two-day summit kicks off on Tuesday.
2. Mrs. Mubarak and Prince Charles inaugurate BUE
In a bid to promote Anglo-Egyptian education ties, Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak and British Crown Prince Charles yesterday inaugurated the British University in Egypt (BUE). The main campus of the new facility occupies an area of 40 acres at the present phase.
After the inauguration ceremony, Mrs. Mubarak, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, known officially as the Dutchess of Cornwall, toured the university premises and attended a music show performed by the students.
The BUE, a non-profit organization, aims to produce graduates of UK standards to enter key sectors of the Egyptian economy.
It provides a cohort of well qualified graduates in key areas of engineering, information technology, computer science and business studies, the Middle East News Agency (MENA) said.
The main mission of the BUE is the provision of education of the highest quality to students to advance industry, the professions and society in Egypt and the Middle East.
3. Cairo demos to mark Yassin's death anniv.
Thousands of students at Cairo and Ain Shams Universities protested yesterday to mark the first anniversary of the death of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, the spiritual leader of Hamas whom Israel assassinated last year.
The students denounced the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the arrest by Israel of Palestinian activists, the Middle East News Agency (MENA) said. Waving banners with slogans in Arabic, the protesters called for an end to Israeli occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
At Cairo University, students and members of staff held a silent demonstration to protest the detention of a teacher, who was recently arrested.

1. More cooperation with Malaysia
Egypt wants to boost cooperation with Malaysia, especially in trading and investment, in the light of the recent progress in the economic sector, said Minister of Home, Foreign Trade and Industry Rashid Mohamed Rashid.
Minister Rashid discussed with Malaysian Minister of Trade and Industry Rofayda Aziz, who is currently visiting Egypt, enhancing trade and investments between the two countries.
On the sidelines of a seminar held yesterday on investment opportunities between Egypt and Malaysia, both ministers agreed to support a joint business council to upgrade cooperation between companies and businessmen in both countries.
In his speech, Minister Rashid stressed opportunities to set up joint enterprises with Malaysia in information technology, petroleum, gas, textiles and clothing, tourism, foodstuffs and communications, in addition to infrastructure development.
Rashid added that Malaysia is an important partner for Egypt, noting that trade between the two countries hit US$396 million in 2004.
Meanwhile, Aziz stressed that Egypt has the potential to be a strong economic partner for Malaysia, urging businessmen in both countries to benefit from trade accords signed by the two countries with different economic blocs worldwide, not to mention the European partnership.
2. Trade talks
The Singaporean Minister of Industry and Trade is due here on Monday at the head of a delegation on a three-day visit to Egypt. "During the visit, the Singaporean official will hold talks with senior Egyptian officials in a bid to boost cooperation in the fields of industry, trade, tourism, petroleum and investment," said Ambassador Ali Hossam Eddin Hefni, the Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs. The Singaporean delegation includes the head of the Parliamentarian Committee for Trade and Industry.
3. Price of Egyptian cotton rises
The price of Egyptian cotton has gone up in the global market, while the price of American cotton has fallen. The contracts for Egyptian cotton for the 2005-06 season are estimated at US$178.8 million, said Salah el-Attar, head of General Authority for Cotton Arbitration. El-Attar added that India is the top importer of Egyptian cotton, accounting for 21.76 per cent of the contracted cotton, Pakistan is close behind on 20.57 per cent and China comes third with 11.86 per cent. Egypt exports its cotton to 26 countries.
