Foreign Minister receives Senior Advisor to the Secretary of State and Coordinator for Iraq

Foreign Minister, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, received Senior Advisor to the Secretary of State and Coordinator for Iraq, Ambassador David Satterfield on May the 11th, 2008.

The meeting tackled the recent developments in Iraq, whose most important manifestations were the severe military confrontations between the Iraqi government and the Shiite militias in the Southern and Northern Iraq, Spokesman stated.

Satterfield presented the US integrated vision of the current events in Iraq and its assessment. He also indicated that the US sees positive developments on Iraqi arena which, if encouraged, would greatly enhance the Iraqi government's capability in maintaining security and stability in the country, the Spokesman added.

Aboul Gheit, on his part presented to the US Official queries regarding the situation in Iraq and the region, in view of the great interest and concern Egypt accords to such an important Arab country. The meeting also discussed the threats which may jeopardize Iraq and the region if security and stability were not controlled.   

Moreover, during the meeting Aboul Gheit clarified the basics of Egypt’s stance towards the Iraqi issue, which include maintaining a unified, secure and stable Iraq, whose policy and orientations are away from sectarian or racist considerations, Spokesman added.
