15 May,2008..
Foreign Minister, Ahmed Aboul Gheit welcomed the announcement made by the Arab Ministerial delegation of reaching an agreement between the Lebanese disputing parties, in implementation of the recent resolution adopted by the Council of Arab Foreign Ministers.
Aboul Gheit described the Lebanese politicians' agreement to restore matters as they were before the 5th of May and end all forms of armed activities and instantly open the road to the international airport, as good and positive. He also said that this agreement would launch a dialogue among Lebanese parties on controversial issues based on the Arab initiative so that General Michel Sleiman would be elected President and the sit-in in downtown Beirut would be ended.
Aboul Gheit also hoped that the aspired dialogue would lead to a settlement which would end the political crisis in Lebanon and restore stability to the country by agreeing on forming a national unity government and a good electoral law agreed upon by all parties.
The Foreign Minister considered that the letter of the agreement which was disclosed today, reflects a balance that provides each of the factions and political parties in Lebanon with its expected role, in a way that maintains the spirit of the Taif Agreement and the Lebanese constitution, as being the main bases for the unique structure of this Arab country.
Aboul Gheit hoped that the Agreement would help the Lebanese overcome last week's difficult events which have affected trust among them, indicating the importance of agreeing on prohibiting armed violence to achieve political goals that do not conform with constitutional legitimacy. |
