21 September 2008….

Cairo is to host the 6th Senior Officials Meeting for China-Africa Cooperation Forum (FOCAC), with the participation of 50 representatives from African countries and China. The meeting is to tackle enhancing cooperation between both sides and preparations for the Forum’s 4th session, which is scheduled to be held in Sharm El-Sheikh next year.

Assistant Foreign Minister and FOCAC coordinator, Ambassador Ibrahim Ali Hassan stated that Egypt hosting the Senior Officials Meeting followed by the Ministerial Meeting comes within the context  of Egypt's presidency of  the Forum’s current session, with China, since the last Summit held in Beijing, in November 2006. Egypt participated in the last Summit with a High-level delegation, headed by President Mubarak.

Ambassador Hassan added that the upcoming Senior Officials Meeting in Cairo will tackle several cooperation issues between Africa and China. The meeting is to review the implemented programmes and developmental projects included in "Beijing declaration and work plan" adopted during the Forum's Summit in November 2006. The meeting is to focus on sectors of agriculture, food security and infrastructure, as being the main pivots of the process of economic development in Africa.

Assistant Foreign Minister highlighted that the meeting-held under Egyptian-Chinese co-presidency- will listen at the opening session to Egypt's statement, which conveys its vision and suggestions to boost cooperation relations between China and Africa, and to enhance the concept of "trilateral cooperation" through which, Egypt and China, offer technical support to the continent’s states, in order to foster its efforts in achieving economic and social development for its Peoples.

Ambassador Ibrahim Ali outlined that FOCAC was launched in 2000, and it holds its sessions once every 3 years in rotation between Beijing and one of the African capitals.
