In the context of Egypt's following up on the situation in Lebanon, Foreign Minister, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, held a number of phone calls in light of the mission assigned to the Arab Ministerial Committee to Beirut, by the Arab League Ministerial Council .
Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry stated that Aboul Gheit received a phone call from Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa, in which they reviewed the measures so far reached by the committee to halt the violence witnessed by Lebanon throughout the last week. Aboul Gheit welcomed all the measures that could be rapidly taken to implement the Foreign Ministers' Council resolution, particularly, opening and securing the road to and from the Beirut International Airport, and re-operating the Beirut Port. Aboul Gheit, the spokesman said, expressed Egypt's support to the Committee's efforts, within the framework of the Arab attempts to restore stability in Lebanon.
Furthermore, Aboul Gheit contacted both the Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, and Head of the Future Movement, Saad El-Hariri, where He discussed the situation following the government's decision to answer the demand of the Army's commander, to rescind the two decisions which have triggered the crisis in the first place. Aboul Gheit expressed to El- Siniora Egypt's support for him and the Lebanese government in all the measures it takes according to its responsibility. He also expressed his comprehensive understanding to the rationale mentioned in the government's statement as concerns rescinding the two decisions, for which no executive decree has been issued.
Aboul Gheit discussed with Hariri the future steps which the latter intends to take as a leader to the majority, to end the crisis, provided that the opposition responds to the Arab efforts and show enough flexibility to implement them.
Aboul Gheit reviewed all these developments in other two calls with the Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Saud al-Faisal and the Jordanian Foreign Minister and Member of the Arab Committee, Salah El-Bashir. Aboul Gheit expressed his aspiration that the Lebanese leaderships would concur with the Arab endeavor to instantly end all armed activities and civil disobedience in the streets of Beirut, stated the spokesman. All factions should show willingness to make the suggested dialogue succeed, in order to end the political crisis completely. The Foreign Ministers agreed to keep on their consultations to follow up the developments of this issue. |
