7 March 2007…

Director of Human Rights Section at the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Counselor Ehab Gamal ElDin, stated that with regards to what has been circulated by some media sources, concerning Egypt cooperating with some countries to drop a UN resolution condemning the Israeli racial practices, is absolutely unfounded.

Counselor Gamal ElDin mentioned that discussions are undergoing regarding the Israeli periodic report, presented to the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, concerned with reviewing the commitment of the parties who signed the Agreement on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, to their obligations. He added that neither recommendations nor resolutions have been issued by the committee; however the committee generally issues comments on the country's commitment to its obligations after reviewing its periodic report, which, in Israel's case, has not taken place yet.

Counselor Gamal ElDin noted that the UN member states are not represented in the committee, as it comprises a group of independent experts elected on a personal basis, and who do not represent their countries nor voice its positions.
