Assistant Foreign Minister for American Affairs and the Organization of American States, Ambassador Hatem Seif El-Nasr, received the Latin American Ambassadors accredited to Cairo on 28 January 2008, within the framework of the periodic consultation meetings held with the foreign diplomatic corps in Cairo. The meeting was also attended by Ambassador Hazem Khayrat, permanent Egyptian representative  to the Arab League.

Ambassador Seif El-Nasr primarily  asserted the importance of the meeting as a forum for consultation and dialogue with Latin American countries , within the framework of  friendship and cooperation ties, indicating  the Foreign Minister's keenness to enhance relations with Latin American countries. The Foreign Minister will  pay a visit to Brazil on 18 February, followed by a visit to Argentina, where he is to preside the Egyptian delegation in the Ministerial Meeting of  the Arab-Latin American Summit, which will  be hosted by Buenos Aires on the 20th and 21st of  February, to prepare for the Second Arab-Latin American Summit.

Egypt's permanent delegate to the Arab League, meanwhile, gave an account of the latest developments in Lebanon and Gaza in light of the Arab Foreign Ministers meetings at the Arab League on January the 27th, which issued a joint statement, tackling the situation in Lebanon and included the Arab countries' praise of the Egyptian efforts which responded to the humanitarian crisis  in Gaza. Ambassador Khayrat emphasized Egypt's keenness to resolve the current situation in Gaza, and highlighted  the Egyptian efforts to reach a resolution to the Lebanese crisis.

Answering the Latin American Ambassadors' inquiries on the current situation on the Egyptian-Palestinian borders, the Palestinians' flow into Egypt, and the consequences this situation might have, Ambassador Sief El-Nasr reviewed  the nature of the border region with the Palestinian territories, and the international agreements governing them, by which Egypt abides. He outlined that Egypt has responded to the deteriorating humanitarian circumstances of the Palestinians. However, this does not mean the continuity of this situation, since controlling the borders is a matter of Egyptian national security is possible . He indicated   Egypt's invitation to all the parties concerned to contribute in resolving this issue, and pointing out that Israel, being the occupation authority, shoulders the responsibility of what is happening under the Geneva Conventions and international law.
