The second round of Political Consultations between the Egyptian and Brazilian Foreign Ministries was held on 26 April, 2007 at the premises of the Foreign Ministry in Brasilia. Assistant Foreign Minister for the Affairs of the Americas and organization of American Affairs, Ambassador Hatem Seif El Nasr headed the Egyptian side, whereas the Brazilian side was headed by Assistant Secretary General for African, Asian and Middle Eastern Affairs Roberto Gagogorabi as well as several senior officials from the relevant Departments at the Brazilian Foreign Ministry .
The round tackled issues of common concern whether those regarding regional issues in the MiddleEast (the Palestinian issue, Iraq, the Iranian nuclear programme, Sudan), Africa, the follow up of the outcome of the Arab /Latin American and the African / Latin American Summits.
The current status of political, economic, commercial, cultural and tourist aspects of bilateral relations was reviewed as well during the round as the two sides affirmed their willingness to develop such aspects and exchange visits on the highest level in addition to working towards further development of Egyptian - Brazilian relations.
Both sides agreed moreover, on the extent of keenness accorded to develop the framework of bilateral agreements between them and surmount all obstacles hindering the signature of agreements with the aim of further promoting their relations
The Consultations also tackled several international issues relating to Security Council reform, disarmament issues, International trade negotiations, bilateral agreements on international arena including the exchanged support for each other's nominated candidates at International Organizations.
The Assistant Foreign Minister meanwhile, met with the Brazilian Foreign Minister on 25th April, where he delivered the message directed from the Egyptian Foreign Minister to his Brazilian counterpart. During the meeting Minister Amorim highlighted his Country's willingness to bolster relations with Egypt and the Arab world and develop bilateral relations including the augmentation of the volume of trade exchange and organizing Egyptian missions to increase Egyptian exports to Brazil.
Ambassador Seif El Nasr shed light on Egypt's contacts and efforts to resume the MiddleEast Peace Process in addition to the arrangements /preparations made for the Conference for Iraq's neighbouring countries.
Amorim finally conveyed the Brazilian President's invitation to President Mubarak to visit Brazil to Ambassador Seif El Nasr , expressing the Brazilian people's aspiration to greet the Egyptian President.
The Assistant Foreign Minister also met with Marcondes Gadelha vice President of External relations at the Brazilian House of Representatives, and the meeting tackled the importance of boosting all aspects of bilateral relations, and promoting parliamentary relations between Egypt and Brazil. Gadelha also indicated that a Joint Friendship Parliamentary Association is currently being formed by the Brazilian side so as to prepare for the first meeting within the closest time possible.
The Ambassador also apprised the Brazilian side with the developments of democratic reform in Egypt including the recent constitutional reform agreed upon by a public referendum last March.
Accordingly, the Ambassador also met with vice Chairman of the External Relations Committee at the Brazilian House of Senators, where the previously tackled items were discussed with Gadelha . The two sides lent special focus to the importance of promoting efforts to increase the flow of Brazilian tourists to Egypt. |
