Assistant Foreign Minister for American Affairs and Organization of American States, Ambassador Hatem Seif El-Nasr, held a meeting with the Latin American Ambassadors accredited to Cairo on May 7th. The meeting tackled the Egyptian-Latin American issues of mutual interest within the framework of the Egyptian exerted efforts to activate all fields of cooperation with the Latin-American countries, which gain the Foreign Minister's special concern.
Ambassador Seif El-Nasr presented the outcome of his tour to Latin America which took place from 15 to 28 April 2007 in which he visited Panama, Mexico, Cuba and Brazil, and delivered messages from Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit to his counterparts in the four countries. Ambassador Seif El Nasr pointed that his visit to Panama included a meeting with Panama's Vice President and Foreign Minister, the holding of a political consultation session, and a meeting with the Panamanian Navigation Authority Chief and the signing the executive programme for cultural cooperation between both countries. In Mexico, Ambassador Seif El-Nasr held the Egyptian-Mexican fifth session for political consultation.
Ambassador Seif El-Nasr pointed to the important discussions held with the Cuban side on issues of common concern within the framework of the Non–Aligned Movement -which is presided by Cuba- which also forms the Troika with Egypt and Malaysia, which will be holding its next summit in Cairo in 2009. Seif El-Nasr also referred to his meeting in Havana with the Cuban Minister of Investment and International Cooperation, in addition to the signing of a memorandum of understanding for cooperation between both Egyptian and Cuban Diplomatic Institutes. He also pointed to his meeting with Brazilian Foreign Minister in Brasilia and holding the Egyptian-Brazilian political consultation mechanism.
Ambassador Seif El- Nasr stated that the meeting was a good opportunity to tackle the means of boosting bilateral relations between Egypt and Latin America, particularly that the upcoming period will witness an increase in the important visits. In this regards, the President of El Salvador is scheduled to visit Egypt on May 21st, and 22nd, and the assistant Foreign Minister of Peru will also visit Cairo on 28th and 29th of the same month to hold the third meeting for the political consultations between the two countries, in addition to the Uruguayan Foreign Minister's visit to Cairo mid July.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Assistant Foreign Minister for American Affairs outlined the latest developments on regional and international issues of common concern, particularly the international ministerial conference on Iraq, recently held in Sharm El-Sheikh, and the meetings of Iraqi neighboring countries and the Quartet. Furthermore, he tackled the Egyptian nomination to the membership of the Human Rights Council. |
