Assistant Foreign Minister for European Affairs, Ambassador Fatma Al-Zahraa Etman held, on April 24th, a meeting with the EU Ambassadors accredited to Cairo, with the participation of Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab Mashreq Affairs, Minister Plenipotentiary Ayman Zein Al-Din, and Director of Palestine Department at the Arab Sector, Counselor Badr Abdel Atty, within the framework of the periodical meetings organised by the Foreign Ministry with the Ambassadors to discuss regional issues of common concern.
The meeting tackled a review on the most significant results of the Ministerial Conference of the Neighbouring Countries of Iraq, held in Kuwait 21-22 April 2008, in addition to affirming Egypt's constant stance regarding the unity of Iraq and the safety of its land. The meeting also welcomed the progress achieved on both the security and political levels, as the latest events asserted the importance of intensifying efforts to push the political process and reconciliation course, it also highlighted Egypt’s keenness on developing bilateral relations with Iraq.
On the other hand, the meeting concentrated on the latest developments related to the Peace Process in the Middle East, particularly Egypt's prompt efforts to appease the situation between Israel and Hamas Movement aspiring to reach a truce which allows the reopen of border crossings, including the Rafah crossing to facilitate the movement of people and goods.
Within the same context, the meeting tackled Egypt's success in the resumption of supplying Gaza's electricity power station with fuel to avoid the escalation of the humanitarian crisis at the Strip.
The meeting also affirmed the importance of the role of European Union with regard to the two abovementioned cases, as well as the need to exert additional effort to support the Middle East Peace Process and contribute in pacifying the situation in Iraq. |
