19 February 2007…..
Assistant Foreign Minister for European Affairs, Ambassador Fatma El-Zahraa Etman, received on 19 February, the Director General of the Swedish Institute in Alexandria Jan Henningsson. During the meeting, Henningsson outlined the institute's activities, and pointed out the interest in the continuous coordination with Bibliotheca Alexandrina and Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for Dialogue between Cultures.
In this context, Ambassador Etman praised the role of the Swedish Institute, and affirmed the urging need to collaborating efforts in order to rectify the image of the Islamic and Arab world in the European public opinion, at the time Islam is exposed to an unprecedented fierce attack. Moreover, she warned against the gravity of the continuous aggravation of cultural and civilization crisis between the Arab and Islamic communities on one hand, and the western European communities on the other, which is fuelled by extremism, fanaticism, isolation and hatred.
Ambassador Etman added that we expect that the "Swedish Institute in Alexandria" would be one of the main fora for presenting the ancient Arab/Islamic heritage in various fields, and for deepening the roots of tolerance, mutual respect and openness to the "other".
