Within the framework of the periodic meetings held by the Assistant Foreign Ministers with the Ambassadors of the various geographic groups, Assistant Foreign Minister for European Affairs, Ambassador Fatma El-Zahraa Etman, held a meeting with the Ambassadors of the EU member states accredited in Cairo. The meeting tackled a number of regional issues of common interest, especially the outcome of the last Arab Summit in Riyadh and the Arab Peace Initiative as well as the role of the Egyptian diplomacy in coordinating and preparing for this Summit. They also discussed the efforts exerted to resume the Peace Process on the Palestinian-Israeli track in light of the Arab Peace Initiative, as well as Egypt's call to hold a meeting for the Initiative Implementation Follow-up committee on the ministerial level on 18 April to discuss means activating it. They also reviewed developments concerning the implementation of the Mecca Agreement between the Palestinian factions and the situation in the Palestinian territories after the formation of the National Unity Government, in addition to the European and international stance towards it.
The meeting also tackled developments in Sudan and the Arab stance towards the Darfur crisis, as well as the Egyptian efforts exerted to achieve security and stability in Iraq, and push reconciliation between the conflicting factions forward since Egypt will host two ministerial meetings concerning Iraq next May.
Foreign Ministry Press Spokesman, Ambassador Alaa El-Hadidi, and Head of the Palestinian Affairs Department, Minister Plenipotentiary Randa Labib, participated in the meeting. |
