Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry receives UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova


Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry received on Tuesday, February 14th    UNESCO Director-General, Ms. Irina Bokova. Minister of Culture, Mr. Helmy Namnam and Minister of Antiquities, Dr. Khaled El-Anany attended the meeting.

Counselor Ahmed Abu Zeid, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out that Minster Shoukry lauded at the outset of the meeting, the efforts exerted by the UNESCO Director General, since she assumed office in 2009, to enhance the UN organization and its role in preserving human and historical heritage around the world. Shoukry expressed appreciation for UNESCO's contribution to the restoration of Egypt's Islamic Museum, which was harmed after the heinous terrorist attack on nearby Cairo security Directorate in 2014, despite lack of available resources. The Foreign Minister valued the cooperation between Egypt and the UNESCO that has been taking place since the project to save the monuments of Nubia was kicked off, noting that this project is the largest to save human heritage throughout the history of UNESCO.

The Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that Ms.  Bokova expressed her sincere appreciation to Egypt for its pivotal role in the UNESCO, as a great civilization with an extended and diversified historical heritage. Ms Bokova expressed keenness to enhance cooperation with Egypt in the upcoming period. The meeting also tackled ways to intensify cooperation across various educational, heritage and cultural areas in Africa, particularly in the Nile Basin Countries, taking into consideration Egypt's full support for UNESCO's priority to Africa policy.

Counselor Ahmed Abu Zeid concluded his remarks by highlighting that the meeting touched on ways to promote the working mechanism of the organization in the future, taking into consideration that issues related to culture, heritage are gaining increasing momentum due to their direct link with causes of international priority like combating extremism and terrorism and sustainable development. Sameh Shoukry expressed Egypt's keenness to continue providing all kind of support to the UNESCO across all its areas of operations.
