Advisory Council to Support Moshira Khattab's Nomination for Top UNESCO Position Meets for First Time



The Advisory Council in support of the nomination of Moshira Khattab to the position of Director-General of UNESCO held its first meeting yesterday under the chairmanship of Minister of Higher Education Dr. Ashraf M. El-Shihy. The council was announced by Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on the occasion of the official announcement of her nomination on July 19.

The Minister of Higher Education expressed his content at the joining of such an elite group of outstanding sons and daughters of Egypt to this important council, as each member possesses extensive experience  across various fields that can contribute positively in support of the candidate. He also praised the Egyptian candidate and her strong history and expansive experience in the field.

Minister Moushira Khattab said the first meeting of the council entailed thorough discussions on ways to support her campaign, whereby each member of the council presented the broad outlines of his intellectual contributions, as well as international contacts, that are proposed to increase her chances of winning the position. The minister also  expressed her appreciation to all members of the Advisory Council for their cooperation and great enthusiasm for her candidacy, stressing that the support received from the Egyptian government, the council, various official and non-official Egyptian institutions, and major Egyptian, Arab and international figures gives great hope for her success in the elections despite the difficulties known to all.

On his part, Ambassador Nihad Abdul Latif, the campaign's manager, said that the campaign is exerting all efforts in different and complementary directions to push forward the electoral program, adding it has initiated contacts with decision-makers of Member States of the Executive Board of the organization, both formal and informal, and has laid out a media plan to achieve the required goals.

Ambassador Abdul Latif  also praised the support received by the campaign from the private sector, and thanked businessman Mohamed Farid Khamis for his proposal to create a fund to financially support the campaign, and for his intention to contribute a substantial amount to the fund. He extended thanks to businessmen Nasser Abdul Latif and Hisham El-Khazindar for their continued support for the campaign.

It is worth mentioning that the Advisory Council membership encompasses notable Egypt calibers, including Dr. Ahmed Okasha, Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Dr. Gaber Asfour, Dr. Zahi Hawass, Mr. Amr Badr, Dr. Farouk El-Baz, Ambassador Fatima Zahra Osman, Mr. Mohamed Salmawy, Mr. Mohamed Farid Khamis, Dr. Mustafa El-Feki, Dr. Malak Zaalouk, Mr. Mounir Fakhri Abdel-Nour, Dr. Nadia Makram Ebeid, Mr. Nasser Abdel-Latif, Mr. Hisham El-Khazindar, and Dr. Hisham al-Sharif. The members of the council were keen to have a photo of themselves taken in front of the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx before the start of the meeting to express their pride in Egypt's civilization and its cultural and civilizational heritage.
