Foreign Minister meets Ileana Ros-Lehtinen Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the House of Representatives
Counselor Ahmed Abu Zeid Spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry stated that Sameh Shoukry Foreign Minister met on Thursday December 1st in Washington with representative "Ileana Ros-Lehtinen" chairwoman of the Sub-Committee for the Middle East and North Africa. The meeting focused on addressing the overall situation in Middle East region. The foreign minister provided insights on Egypt' assessment of the Palestinian issue and Egypt's role in encouraging the Palestinian and Israeli side to resume the peace process. Minister Shoukry also touched upon the efforts made by Egypt in the fight against terrorism, stressing the importance of continuing US support to Egypt in this area and highlighting the many sacrifices by Egyptian army and police in the fight against terrorism.
Abu Zeid added, that responding to an inquiry by the representative about the situation in Syria, Minister Shoukry explained the elements constituting Egypt's vision to resolve the Syrian crisis, which focus on the pivotal role of the political resolution to the crisis; the fight against terrorism; dealing with the humanitarian crisis; to safeguard the elements of the Syrian state; and finally work according to the Geneva's output, as The framework for the transition in Syria.
On Egyptian-US bilateral relations, Shoukry stressed the importance of the strategic relations, explaining the various elements of the economic and social reform program as well as the ongoing process of democratization in Egypt. The foreign minister also made reference to the importance of continued US support for Egypt as a strategic partner over the long decades, in order to ensure achieving the desired success and progress in implementation of the ambitious plans of the Egyptian government in these areas. Shoukry also highlighted that the Egyptian government is serious in taking all necessary measures to redress economic inequalities that characterized the Egyptian economy, and is committed to continue these efforts.
The spokesperson concluded his statement, noting that the Foreign Minister extended an invitation to the Representative to visit Egypt, who in turn expressed readiness to visit Egypt at the earliest opportunity to get closely acquainted with the situation in Egypt and the important role played by Egypt in support of stability and peace in the Middle East
