Foreign Minister meets with the UN Secretary General-elect António Guterres in New York


In a statement, the Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Counselor Ahmed Abu Zeid, indicated that Shoukry re-expressed congratulations to the new UN Secretary-General for assuming such prestigious post next January, and affirmed confidence in the cumulative experience the UN official has earned throughout his lengthy and rich political career, which would best endorse him at the helm of the international Organization, as he manages its work with independence and full transparency. He also indicated that Egypt is eager to provide all forms of support to improve the working mechanisms of the United Nations, and to deal with the mounting challenges facing the organization, amid the troubled global situation we all witness, especially in the Middle East with the torrent of crises engulfing the region.

Guterres expressed his sincere gratitude for Egypt's support to his candidacy for the post of United Nations Secretary-General, and voiced his appreciation for Egypt's leading role, as a pillar of stability in the region and the world, with the tireless efforts it exerts during its current membership of the Security Council in order to furnish a better environment for restoring peace and security in the Middle East and Africa.

Abu Zeid added that during the meeting, the two officials exchanged views concerning the crises facing the Middle East, whether in Libya, Syria, or Yemen, as well as the peace process prospects and support efforts for the Palestinian cause, in addition to the United Nations priorities in the coming period and means to deal with many important and urgent files. Minister Shoukry stressed the importance of the developmental dimension in addressing many of the current international and regional questions, noting the need to deal objectively with all these issues, and to enhance the role of the South countries within the Organization.

The UN Secretary-General affirmed keenness to boost communication and coordination with Egypt and to work closely in the coming period in order to enhance the UN role, taken into consideration Egypt's longstanding and independent positions towards the different regional and international causes, and as it enjoys broad-based appreciation among the United Nations members, in addition to its keenness on activating the role of multilateral diplomacy and achieving the necessary consensus within the various Organization bodies, particularly the Security Council, so as to better advance international peace and security.
