Foreign Minister Meets EU High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy
On the sidelines of the Arab-European ministerial meeting held in Cairo on December 20, 2016, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met EU High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid said that during the meeting Shoukry stressed the importance of partnership between Egypt and the EU in various fields, pointing out that the economic reform program adopted by the Egyptian government, and what has been adopted in terms of tough economic measures during the recent period, leaves no room for doubt about the confidence of the Egyptian people in their leadership. In this regard, he noted that Egypt is looking forward to the European Union’s understanding of the nature of the reform process experienced by Egypt, and the relentless pursuit by the Egyptian government to consolidate the democratic institutions in the context of maintaining the cohesion of the state, which is in everyone's interest, especially the European Union in light of the special nature of the relationship between Egypt and the EU.
The spokesperson added that the meeting touched on channels of coordination between Egypt and the European Union at this delicate time through which the region and the world are passing, in light of the rising tide of terrorism that targets the stability of states and peoples without distinction of religion or race. He stressed the need to address the roots of this phenomenon and combat extremist ideology in all its forms and manifestations. The two officials also discussed the prospects of cooperation between Egypt and the EU in the fight against illegal immigration from a perspective of partnership and coordination to create a common vision to achieve the interests of both parties.
On her part, Mogherini confirmed that Egypt's stability is vital to the European side, where she the Foreign Minister outlined Egypt’s positions and visions towards important regional issues, particularly the situation in Syria, Libya, Yemen and Iraq, as well as the resumption of the peace process between the Palestinian and Israeli sides. She praised Egypt’s balanced positions that aim to achieve security and stability in the Middle East, which is in line with the European position of seeking political solutions to the crises in the region. She also expressed the EU's support for the Egyptian efforts in the fight against extremist ideology and spreading the voice of moderation. The EU official also outlined the vision of the European Union on dealing with the humanitarian, economic and political situation in Syria, and said she looked forward to cooperation with Egypt and listening to its assessment on the proposed plan. The minister welcomed the ideas put forward by Mogherini, expressing Egypt's aspiration to cooperation, coordination and consultation with the European Union in this regard.
