Foreign Minister receives his Iraqi counterpart
Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received on Thursday December 22, 2016, the Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim Al-Jaafari. The Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Counselor Ahmed Abu Zeid, stated that they discussed bilateral relations between the two countries and means to strengthen them so as to serve the interests of the two brotherly peoples, thus to correspond to the historic depth, and the political and security weight of the two countries on Arab, regional, and international levels, in addition to efforts to combat the terrorism and extremism phenomena.
During the meeting, Minister Shoukry stressed Egypt's keenness to provide support for Iraq and to all efforts aiming to maintain its unity and sovereignty over its entire territory, to restore its security and stability, and to enhance its role in the Arab arena, particularly with regard to the important regional issues that require the unification of all Arab ranks, in order to face the different challenges at the regional and international levels, stressing, in this regard, the need to intensify Arab, regional, and international efforts to fight terrorist organizations.
For his part, the Iraqi Foreign Minister appreciated Egypt's historic and pivotal role in the region, in support for all efforts aiming to achieve security and stability in the Arab world, and to preserve the peoples' capabilities and the Arab countries' territorial integrity, praising its effective role in fighting terrorism and facing the terrorist organizations.
Iraq's Foreign Minister valued the patriotic and heroic role carried out by the Egyptian armed forces and Al-Azhar Al-Sharif as well as the universities and the Egyptian judiciary to protect the Egyptian State during the period of unrest in the last few years, noting that such national institutions and the role they played is the biggest proof of Egypt's priceless cultural and civilization weight. Al-Jaafari also briefed the Foreign Minister on the latest political and security developments in Iraq, and reviewed efforts to liberate the Iraqi cities from the grip of the “Daesh” terrorist organization, noting in this regard the efforts made by all spectra of the Iraqi people to counter the abhorrent phenomenon of terrorism.
The Spokesperson added that Shoukry also stressed the depth and strength of the relations between the two brotherly countries, and emphasized the need to intensify cooperation in all fields, particularly in political and security areas. He added that he is looking forward to holding the meeting of the joint committee for political consultation at the level of foreign ministers next February, in order to coordinate and consult on the main regional and international developments, as well as on means to provide support for the reconstruction of Iraq and to fight terrorism, so as to achieve the aspirations of the brotherly Iraqi people.
