Shoukry meets with Austrian Foreign Minister
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid said that Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met Friday, October 14, Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz in the framework of his visit to the Austrian capital Vienna. Shoukry outlined the latest developments in Egypt, particularly the Egyptian government's efforts to ensure political stability and security, strengthening democratic structures and frameworks, as well as in regards to the economy. The minister also praised Austria's easing of guidelines for travel to Egypt in light of the importance of the tourism sector to the Egyptian economy.
The Foreign Minister also discussed Egypt's efforts to deal with the major issues in the region and the world, topped by anti-terrorism efforts in light of Egypt's membership in the UN Security Council and its presidency of the Counter-Terrorism Committee of the United Nations, as well as the fight against extremism and militancy and the efforts by Egypt to spread Islamic values of moderation. Shoukry also stressed Egypt's continued desire to intensify and strengthen cooperation with Austria in various fields, especially in the economic field and to promote trade, in such a way that elevates relations between the two countries especially after the opening of the Egyptian Austrian business forum during the current visit. In this regard, the Austrian Foreign Minister noted that there are approximately 600 Austrian companies looking to increase their contribution to the partnership between the two countries.
The spokesperson added that the Austrian Foreign Minister was keen to gain insight on Egypt's positions on major regional issues, particularly the situation in Syria and Libya, as well as Egyptian efforts to revive negotiations between the Palestinian and Israeli sides. Shoukry affirmed the determinants of the Egyptian position towards the Syrian issue and noted that Egypt places a great deal of importance on the arrival of humanitarian aid to civilians and the need to revive the political process to reach a settlement to the current crisis.
The Foreign Minister also gave a detailed outline of national efforts to combat illegal immigration in light of the importance of this issue to the Austrian side and its repercussions for the entire European continent. The Austrian Foreign Minister praised Egyptian efforts in this regard, particularly with regard to the fight against trafficking networks and efforts to promote integration for refugees.
