Foreign Minister meets with Dr. Saeb Erekat
Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met on Thursday with Dr. Saeb Erekat, the Palestinian Chief Negotiator, who is currently visiting Egypt for consultations on the latest developments of the Palestinian Question, and the prospects for the Middle East Peace Process.
The Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Counselor Ahmed Abu Zeid, stated that Erekat expressed, at the beginning of the meeting, his appreciation for Egypt's historical, steadfast and decades-long role in support of the Palestinian Cause, noting that the Palestinian people place full confidence in Egypt and its sincere efforts to reach a peaceful settlement of the Palestinian question. The Chief negotiator briefed Minister Shoukry on the latest developments in the Palestinian territories, and the outcome of the Palestinian contacts and endeavors on the regional and international arenas, which aim to rally support for the Palestinian cause in light of the current developments.
For his part, Shoukry stressed Egypt's unequivocal and steadfast commitment to support the Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of its people. The Minister emphasized the highest priority Egypt attaches to the Palestinian Cause in its foreign policy and contacts at the regional and international levels. The two sides agreed on the importance of coordinating with the new US Administration and other international and regional parties in order to resume the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations’ process, in accordance with the international terms of reference, thus to implement the two-state solution and establish the Palestinian State on the borders of June 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Spokesperson added that the two sides also addressed the Palestinian question- related issues that will be raised during the meetings of the Arab League's twenty-eighth Summit, to be hosted by Jordan next March.
