Shoukry starts important visit to Washington, Meets with US Secretary of State
The Spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, Counselor Ahmed Abu Zeid, said that Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met today February 27, as he starts an important visit to Washington, with the US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson. The meeting brings them together for the first time.
The Foreign Ministry Spokesperson indicated that the meeting emphasized the deep and special strategic relations bonding the two countries for decades, as they discussed means to support and strengthen such ties during the next phase under the new American Administration. They also exchanged views on a number of regional issues, particularly in the context of common interests aiming to support stability and peace in the Middle East.
Abu Zeid added that Tillerson was keen to listen to the briefing by Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on the economic, political and security developments in Egypt, and measures implemented by the Egyptian government during the recent period. He added that these measures reflected serious political will to adopt a comprehensive reform program with a gradual approach, so as to preserve the society’s stability in order to successfully complete the democratic transition process.
Shoukry addressed as well the challenges related to counter-terrorism efforts in Egypt and the region, explaining that this phenomenon poses a threat requiring concerted efforts by the international community to eliminate it.
Foreign Minister was also keen to tackle the other challenges associated with crises in the Middle East. He indicated that the Egyptian stance towards Syria is based on the need to support the aspirations of the Syrian people, to protect its national unity, and preserve its institutions by reaching a political solution acceptable to all parties. As for Libya, Shoukry highlighted the importance of Skhirat agreement in order to achieve a breakthrough between the parties to the crisis, shedding lights on the outcome of the recent endeavors of the Egyptian National Committee on Libya with the Libyan factions. He also stressed the Egyptian government’s commitment to support the establishing of a Palestinian State, while reviewing the Egyptian efforts aiming to resume negotiations between the Palestinian and Israeli sides.
Spokesperson concluded his comments by noting that Tillerson affirmed that the United States considers Egypt as a true partner in the Middle East, and that The United States is keen on helping Egypt overcome challenges on all political, economic and security levels. He added that the United States appreciates Egypt’s counter-terrorism efforts, and intends to provide it with further support to empower the country in terms of countering and eradicating terrorism. He added that the US will enable Egypt to carry out this mission via pursuing its economic support program.
