Foreign Minister Receives Filippo Grandi
Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Soukry received today the 19th of October UNHCR Commissioner Filippo Grandi.
Counselor Ahmed Abu Zeid Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs outlined in his remarks that the UN Commissioner lauded Egypt’s international and regional pioneering role as well as its efforts to maintain security and stability in the region
Abu Zeid added that Grandi further expressed his comprehension of the challenges encountered by the Egyptian government in receiving the mounting numbers of Arab and African refugees. He also expressed his keenness to enhance cooperation between Egypt and the United Nations over the refugees’ cause , particularly in the aftermath of the high level meeting of the UN General Assembly held last September in New York, and its outcomes.
Egypt’s Foreign Minister asserted Egypt’s readiness to enhance cooperation and consultations with all relevant stakeholders in order to deal with the phenomenon of refugees and its implications on both transit and destination countries. The Foreign Minister pointed out the efforts exerted by Egypt to reintegrate refugees, Syrians in particular, despite ensuing economic and financial pressures. Shoukry emphasized the need to mobilize additional and non-conventional resources for the hosting countries.
The spokesperson concluded his remarks noting that the meeting tackled ongoing regional developments, whereas Shoukry presented his views with regards to the Syrian crises, the situations in Libya and Iraq, as well as the mounting challenges that affect the security and stability in the Middle East.
